I need to preface this post with the fact that it is one of those posts that might share more than you want to know!!! 2nd preface, I should be writing my paper right now, but I’m so over school!!!
So……back to the topic of this post!! While I have taken vitamins before, a lot (remember that’s my claim as to why I don’t need to eat vegetables – they make vitamins for that) – I HATE PRENATAL VITAMINS!!!
Living with IBS my entire life I have never been, for lack of a better word, regular!! This has been how my life has always been…..I’m used to it and while it does suck (obviously) I’ve learned to live with it!! Well, fast forward my life until RIGHT NOW, and, um…….these vitamins are most definitely keeping things REGULAR, MORE than I think is normal for most people, and if it is in fact ‘normal’ I will gladly live my life as I always have with IBS, haha!!!
I am pretty sure I have gone potty more in the past couple/few weeks, since starting taking prenatal vitamins, then I have in 3 months prior to starting!!! I am sure everyone is thinking, why, WHY would I complain about this right………I mean it is desired to be ‘regular’, right? Well, let me explain (remember the preface above!!) my stomach really doesn’t feel happy most of the time, and as I said to Jeanna earlier, I’d just like a ‘solid’ #2, but it’s not, and I really have hardly any notice before I have to RUN!!!
So to keep in theme of documenting ALL we go through on this journey, I am documenting that I HATE PRENATAL VITAMINS, and while I’ll complain about it a little, I’ll continue to take them, as I’ll do anything to make this process a success!!

I haven’t looked at the particulars regarding content of prenatal vitamins in oh about 6 years now, but things like magnesium (or probably like half the other things squished into those pills) can definitely get things…going (hey I had to, it was right there)! It might take a couple more days or up to two weeks, but your body *should* adjust to the vitamins. Take heart, at least they don’t make you puke (some do)!
Debbie says
I think part of it is the iron (color of…..) haha!! And the fish oil….that’s the other part I didnt add above, burping fishy taste…….OH YUMMY!!!!!!
Debbie says
Oh and they have made me puke a couple times, but that is just when I don’t have enough in my belly…….I make sure I do now 🙂
Mrs. Mer10 says
Try taking them at night. I have the same problem where I got really consipated (TMI) but it is from the increase in iron. Also, increase your water intake and decrease your sugar in take. YES this means your dear friend 5 hour engery!! It really helped me!! Give it a try!!
Debbie says
Iron makes you constipated?? Mmmmmmmm interesting……..as I commented above I’d say it is definitely iron that is impacting me, haha!! I drink a LOT of water, I always have, at least 2 or three bottles a day on the weekend and during the work week at least 5 or more!! Will keep working at it, perhaps it’ll get better?!
Leanne says
Oh yes, iron is famous for that, I would blame other vitamin components before I blame iron. However, it is likely that it was the iron that made you pukey, and you’ve done the right thing on that front (food in belly). I concur suggestion to take them at night, forgot about that part! I had to take them at night with Wynter and Chane definitely had to take hers at night!
Barbara says
I took prenatal vitamins WITHOUT iron for my second babe and all was well. Is that a possibility for you? ((((HUGS))))
Debbie says
I doubt it!! I’ve always had low iron 🙁
Bino Mc Loughlin says
Debs I read the above comments from everyone, the problem is you need it as your iron has always been to low even as a child but even then we tried to give you iron tablets and we had to stop as it made you to sick. But to get that baba going persevere as you say and maybe a very good idea to take them at night. Love you darling good luck with this endeavour and I cannot wait for another grand daughter or grandson. So excited love you tons.
Debbie says
Hey mom!! I wont quit taking me!! I really DONT think its the iron, I think its the fishy oil stuff 😉
Brenda@MyParentingCoach.com says
Hey Deb, thanks for the update! I look forward to reading more posts from you about your adventure. I think my partner is perfectly happy with the fact that she came into an instant family! I’ll add my two cents in here too..in addition to the vits you might try some probiotics. They help normalize things..might relax the ibs a bit too.
Debbie says
Thanks Brenda!! I will look into probiotics!! Thanks for the advice!!
Bonnie says
I really feel for you,. I can not for any reason take the hard normal vitamins. They always make me sick etc. I do take the soft gel type with success! The fishy taste/burping. If you are taking a separate pill for this. They do make the burp-less type. Just check you labels. Good luck!
Debbie says
Hey Bonnie, the pre natal vitamins I have actually have two pills, the hard pill and the soft oil pill?!?! I got a LOT of free samples of Centrum Vitamins when I went to a preview of What ot Expect when Expecting, so I have been taking those.
Melissa Lawler says
You need to tell your doc about your GI reaction to the vitamins that you are taking. There are more gentle vitamins out there.

i hated prenatal vitamins when i first started taking them. they had me feeling SO sick… BUT i switched to target brand GUMMY vitamins and haven’t had ANY problems. plus they’re delicious and taste like candy!
Dar says
I agree with Danielle, I couldn’t tolerate the prenatal vits (I too have IBS and Colitis), so my doctor said to switch to the Gummy Vits and they work wonders – just double up and you are golden (2 in the AM and 2 at night for me)
Terry says
Gummy vitamins all the way, love them. Debbie, try juicing to get your nutrients you can get all your food groups in (although the green colour looks bad). I am anemic and have found a juice recipe to lift my iron levels – have been using this and look forward to my next blood test to see if this worked as I hate the tablets.
